Role of environmental filtering and functional traits for species coexistence in a harsh tropical montane ecosystem

چکیده
Abstract Environmental filtering and niche differentiation are often invoked to explain species coexistence at local scales. The ironstone campo rupestre of Brazil provides a biodiverse natural experiment in which edaphic gradients represent filters test the hypothesis that plant community functional composition, despite converging on extreme stress tolerance, exhibits co-structure with environmental parameters. At Serra do Rola-Moça State Park, soil physico-chemical parameters were characterized alongside community-weighted mean traits Grime’s competitor, stress-tolerator ruderal strategies for each sampling site. In general, exhibited high degree tolerance (between 72.6% 100%), while ruderalism was 0% all species. Soil nutrients related metabolism (e.g. P, Ca, Mg) associated stress-tolerant strategy involved leaf economics size spectra. Despite major filter selecting fine-scale microhabitat variability represented by fertility (i.e. water retention capacity clay content) subtle variation ecological rupestre.

Plant functional traits and the multidimensional nature of species coexistence.
Understanding the processes maintaining species diversity is a central problem in ecology, with implications for the conservation and management of ecosystems. Although biologists often assume that trait differences between competitors promote diversity, empirical evidence connecting functional traits to the niche differences that stabilize species coexistence is rare. Obtaining such evidence i...
متن کاملpassivity in waiting for godot and endgame: a psychoanalytic reading
this study intends to investigate samuel beckett’s waiting for godot and endgame under the lacanian psychoanalysis. it begins by explaining the most important concepts of lacanian psychoanalysis. the beckettian characters are studied regarding their state of unconscious, and not the state of consciousness as is common in most beckett studies. according to lacan, language plays the sole role in ...
role of cultural iran in promotion of multilaieralism in central asia and caucasus
cultural iran is a scope that is more extended than the political territories of iran as a political unit. this concept means that cultural geography(mehdi moghanlo-1383-1) of iran is greater than its political geography which, according to history, has a long history extending west-east from kandahar to the euphrates and north-south from the persian gulf to the caucasus including transoxiana a...
15 صفحه اولRegeneration patterns, environmental filtering and tree species coexistence in a temperate forest.
Forest ecologists researching the functional basis of tree regeneration patterns and species coexistence often attempt to correlate traits with light-gradient partitioning. However, an exclusive focus on light can overlook other important drivers of forest dynamics. We measured light, temperatures, humidity and sapling densities in each of four phases of a forest dynamic mosaic in New Zealand: ...
متن کاملThe role of environmental generalist species in ecosystem function
We constructed a Lotka–Volterra-like competition model to study the role of environmental generalists in maintaining ecosystem function under a range of species richnesses and environmental conditions. Ecosystem function was quantified as community biomass, proportion of initial species that coexist through time, and resilience and resistance to perturbation. Generalist and specialist species w...
